Nokrek is situated in the West Garo Hills district of
Meghalaya. The place has been declared as the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO,
in 2009. The national park is located at a distance of about Tura Peak and the region provides adventurous trekking opportunities. Nokrek is regarded as the highest peak in West Garo Hills. Several rivers of the region like Ganol, Dareng, Bugi, Rongdik and Simsang originate from the Nokrek range. Among these rivers, the Simsang is considered as the most important one, which flows to Bangladesh, where it is known as Someshwari. The park is filled with the rare species of plants and animals. Another special feature about this place is the rare species of citrus-indica, which is abundantly found in this area, locally known as ‘memang narang’, when literally translated, it means the ‘orange of the spirits’. Flora
Besides the Orange of the Spirits and other citric
fruits, the vegetation of this park also comprises of grand rasamala, medical
trees, lali, variety of rare orchids, chempaka, white meranti and wild lemon
trees. There are yet more species of plants gown at this place, which are yet
to be identified.
Fauna
The main attraction of this place is the wide range of
wildlife that inhabits this place. The place is also home to endangered species
of mammals, invertebrate animal, reptiles, and avifauna. The wide range of
wildlife that you can spot at this place are leopards, capped langur, python, tigers,
wild buffalo, clouded leopard, fishing cat, sambar deer, green pigeon, golden
cat, pangolin and few others. Hillock Gibbon is the endangered species which
can be found only at this place in the entire India. These wild species ca n be
easily spotted in the wilderness of the park. The national park is also an ideal
place for bird watching.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the place is during the months of
October to March, as the regioni experiences salubrious climate during this
time of the year.

place is the Guwahati railway station, which is located at a distance of about
