Kanker District, a Popular Tourist Destination in Chhattisgarh



Kanker is a district, located in the southern part of Chhattisgarh
. The district is placed at a height of about 388 m above sea level and it lies between two well developed cities of the state, namely Jagdalpur and Raipur. Earlier Kanker was the part of Bastar district and later it in the year 1998, it got a separate identity of an independent district. The region is filled with immense natural beauty and archaeological importance. You will also find some mesmerizing waterfalls at this place.

Attractions
Gadiya Mountain- Gadiya Mountain is also known as Kila Dongri and it is the highest point in Kanker region. The mountain gained importance when King Dharma Dev of the Kandra dynasty took over the region and declared Gadiya Mountian as his capital. There is a water tank on this mountain, which never runs dry and the parts of the tank are named after the king’s two daughters, Sonai and Rupai. The Churi Pagar cave located at the southern part of the water tank served as a hiding place for the royal family during the time of war. The mountain has another cave called Jogi Gufa at the southern part, which was used by the sages for meditation during the early period. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated with great zeal at this mountain. 

Shivani Temple- Also known as Shivani Maa temple, this holy shrine is one of the oldest temples of Kanker district. The main deity of the temple is the combination of Goddess Kali and Goddess Durga. The festival of Navratri is celebrated with great grandeur at this temple. 

Malanjhkudum Falls- There is three falls at Malanjhkudum, which falls from a height of 10 m, 15 m and 9 m respectively. The source of these falls is Doodh River and is regarded as a popular spot for picnic by the locals of this region.  Malanjhkudum falls are located at a distance of about 15 km from the main town of Kanker.

Charre-Marre Waterfall- It is another popular tourist attraction of the region, located at a distance of about 17 km from Antagarh, a block in Kanker district. This mesmerizing waterfall cascades down from a height of about 16 m and its source is the Jogidahara River. The sight of this waterfall is certainly fascinating.  

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the place is during the months of October and March, when the region experiences a pleasant climate.

The region is dotted with several budget and mid budget hotels along with few luxury hotels. The luxury hotels of this place offer excellent staying facilities with all the modern day amenities available, whereas the budget and mid budget hotels of this place offer standard services with all the basic and some modern day amenities available. 

How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airport to the place is the Raipur airport, located at a distance of about 128 km. The airport is well connected with places like Bangalore, Chennai, Bhopal, Delhi, Indore, Mumbai, Jaipur Kolkata, Hyderabad etc. Regular taxi services are available from the airport to get to the place.

By Train: The nearest railway station to the place is the Raipur Railway Station, located at a distance of about 127 km. The station is well linked with places like Mumbai, Bangalore, Jaipur, Jabalpur, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmadabad etc.

By Road: Kanker has a very good network of roads that connects it with places like Mohala (112 km), Raipur (128 km), Charama (31 km), Nagpur (341 km), Narharpur (26 km), Hyderabad (641 km), Kolkata (944 km). Kanker receives regular government owned buses and private buses form these places.
