Crest of Martyr, India Gate, New Delhi

Solidarity and fraternity speaking the heart of India gate is a symbolic approach
of our nation to bond all the differences into one. National monument which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens stands as an eternal epitome giving its tribute to the Martyrs who lost their life during Afghan war and World War I.

Situated at a heart of New Delhi this historical testimonial commemorates 70000 soldiers who gave up their life for the British army during the course of World War I.

Cenotaph bears the names of above 13516 soldiers of both Indian and British who served in North Western frontier and sleep a night of death while saving the land.

Its foundation stone was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and the monument was commemorated to the nation after 10 years of its inauguration by Lord Irwin.

In the beginning a statue of George V, Emperor of India stood under the canopy of India gate which was later shifted to Coronation Park along with other British statues and in the vacant space the flame of immortal soldier was placed.

An immortal flame which is known as Amar Jawan Jyoti is a symbol of their sacrifice and it enlighten the bravery of Indian army and inspires youths to join the great Indian Army to serve the nation.

History

After the price of Independence India gate came under the site of Amar Jawan Jyoti Indians army crypt of the strange soldier.

Designed and perfected by Edwin Lutyens in 1991 this is the largest war memorials in India. The sanctum of the Amar Jawan Jyoti which is burning since 1971 represents an eternal sepulchre of the Unknown Soldier.

The gate which was unveil by Prime minister of India on January 26, 1971 is surrounded by four torches on its four corner beside that the shrine which has kept the fire alive is made with black marble with a rifle which is placed on its barrel. The word Amar Jawan is craved with gold on either face of the memorial.

Location

This 42 meter tall monument is located at a heart of New Delhi which is a capital of India and its location is design in a way so that it could serve all the important roads. A lawn of Raj Path which surrounds the side of the India gate spells the magic and adds more delight to its location.

Importance

Being a national treasure this area is supervised by military and police throughout the year because this monument connects the heart of people and it symbolizes nation solidarity and sacrifice.
